Summary

Science is making great progress in researching and combating diseases. Much of this research initially takes place in the laboratory. An important platform for laboratory research is provided by so-called organoids: three-dimensional structures made up of various cell types from a specific organ or tumor, which together form a structure similar to that of the original organ or tumor. The aim of this study is to generate such organoids from the tumor tissue of patients with thyroid carcinoma. The organoids obtained in this way will then be used to better understand and further investigate thyroid carcinoma.

Inclusion criteria

- Written informed consent - Histopathologically confirmed thyroid carcinoma - Evidence of lymph node and/or distant metastases

Exclusion criteria

- Age < 18 years - Lack of capacity to consent - Insufficient tumor tissue available for organoid establishment - Pregnancy

Primary outcomes

Primary objective is the establishment of organoid cultures from tumor tissue of at least 10 patients with thyroid carcinoma, obtained during standard surgical resection. Subsequently, the histopathological and genetic concordance of the organoids with the original tissue will be assessed to demonstrate their suitability as a platform for further research on thyroid carcinoma.
